HITEM director Jennifer’s folk music group the Halifax Rättvik Trio from Sweden is visiting Nova Scotia for a concert tour hosted by the Musique Royale concert series! See the poster for concert dates and locations, including a Halifax concert Aug. 24. They are also holding a Workshop Day on Aug. 23. Hosted by the Halifax Institute of Traditional and Early Music, Workshop Day will focus on Swedish folk and neo-traditional tunes and on creative accompanying and arranging techniques.
All instruments welcome, with fun offerings for both melody and harmony/rhythm players. We will work as much as possible by ear, with some references to sheet music, and audio recordings to practice with at home after the workshop will be provided. The workshop will expand your artistic horizons, and whether you are approaching Nordic music from a Celtic or other background, you will discover some fresh new musical vocabulary to add to your repertoire.
It will run from 12:30pm - approx. 4:30pm including break times at St. George's Round Church. Light refreshments will be offered during breaks. The suggested fee is $25, or pay what you can, and any little extra amount to help with costs is much appreciated.

Private guitar and bass lessons with phenomenal instrumentalist, teacher, composer, and arranger Peter Rousu can also be arranged separately during the previous week. Email us to inquire further! info@tradandearlymusic.ca
Informal chats on the manufacture of traditional folk instruments can also be arranged with Stefan Ekedahl for those interested in instrument-making. Stefan is a fine cellist, one of the key figures in Sweden’s folk music revival, and a maker and player of traditional spelpipor (recorder/whistle-like flutes), säckpipor (bagpipes, which have been brought back from near extinction), and moraharpor (diatonic keyed fiddles, ancestors to today’s nyckelharpa).
